Katie McGuire, R.N., receives monthly nursing Daisy Award

Katie McGuire, R.N., received the monthly Daisy Award at Community NorthKatie McGuire, R.N., received the monthly Daisy Award at Community North. She works in medical/renal/oncology and was nominated by a patient. The attention and compassionate care she provided, along with a lighthearted sense of humor, resonated with the patient, who was experiencing a particularly difficult hospital stay.

The patient had been suffering all night from diarrhea, fever and insomnia, but when McGuire checked in on the patient the next day, her sunny smile put the patient at ease. McGuire took the time to explain a new medication, kneeling by the bedside to discuss the benefits and potential complications. In nominating McGuire for the Daisy Award, the patient praises her upbeat and knowledgeable approach, saying, “You’ve brightened my spirit while helping me with my recovery.”

The patient adds, “Katie is an exceptional R.N. I think her commitment to quality patient care, empathy for her patients, as well as commitment to Community Hospital North would make this young lady deserving of the Daisy Award.”

McGuire had a lot of influence from friends and family to come on board with Community Health Network, and she finally joined the team in December 2006 as a student nurse. Her mother has been with Community for more than 25 years, a cousin is a former nurse at Community North and her best friend is also a network nurse. The people with whom she works are among the things she likes best about working at Community, though her five-minute commute is another big plus.

After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in marketing from Butler University in 2004, she returned to school to receive her bachelor’s in nursing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 2007. She will celebrate her second wedding anniversary this year, and in her spare time she enjoys reading and traveling.

The Daisy Award at Community North is made possible through the generous support of the Community Health Network Foundation. The winning nurse was selected from among 66 nurses who were nominated by patients or families for a Daisy Award during the month of January. Nominations were submitted either by paper or through the hospital’s interactive patient care system, the GetWell Network. From those nominations, Community Hospital North’s nursing directors selected the winning nomination based on the principles of Community’s exceptional patient experience: providing care that is high quality, safe, compassionate, special and timely.

In recognition for the exceptional patient experience, our Daisy Award recipient received:

  • A Daisy Award certificate and pin.
  • A sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved for the Daisy Foundation by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
